Powell was the grandson of Alabama slaves and was born in Greenville, Alabama. During his youth, Powell moved with his family to Minerva, Ohio. In high school there, he played golf and football. Later, at the state's historically African-American Wilberforce University, he played on the golf team. After serving in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II in England, he returned to the Canton, Ohio-area near Minerva in 1946, and began work first as a janitor and later as a security guard for the Timken bearing and steel company.[1] Due to racial segregation, he was banned from all-white public golf courses and was rejected for a bank loan to try to build his own. With financing from two African-American doctors and a loan from his brother, Powell bought a 78-acre (320,000 m2) dairy farm in East Canton, Ohio, and with his wife, Marcella, did most of the landscaping by hand. Rebecca Lee Crumpler , born Rebecca Davis, (February 8, 1831 – March 9, 1895), was an American physician, nurse and author. After studying at the  New England Female Medical College , in 1864 she became the first African American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States.Crumpler was also one of the first female physician authors in the nineteenth century.In 1883, she published  A Book of Medical Discourses . The book has two parts that cover the prevention and cure of infantile bowel complaints, and the life and growth of human beings. Dedicated to nurses and mothers, it focuses on  maternal  and  pediatric medical care  and was among the first publications written by an African American on the subject of medicine.

The settlement was located near the current Upper West Side neighborhood, approximately bounded by Central Park West and the axes of 82nd Street, 89th Street, and Seventh Avenue, had they been constructed through the park. Seneca Village was founded in 1825 by free Black Americans, the first such community in the city, although under Dutch rule there was a "half-free" community of African-owned farms north of New Amsterdam. At its peak, the community had approximately 225 residents, three churches, two schools, and three cemeteries. The settlement was later also inhabited by Irish and German immigrants. He played as a fullback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) from 1957 through 1965. Several incidents centering on the segregation of the local bowling alley,  All-Star Bowling Lane , led up to the Orangeburg Massacre on February 8, 1968. In the fall of 1967, some of the black leaders within the community tried to convince Harry K. Floyd, the owner of the bowling alley, to allow African Americans. Floyd was unwilling to desegregate, and as a result, protests began in early February 1968. On February 5, 1968, a group of around 40 students from  South Carolina State University  entered the bowling alley and left peacefully after they were asked to leave by Floyd. [3]  The next night more students led by John Stroman returned and entered the bowling alley. This time police were waiting for them, and several students were detained, including Stroman. John Brown  (June 11, 1937 – March 2, 2022) was an American actor and singer. Brown was a nightclub and stage performer as well as a comic actor, and a regular cast member of the television series  Laugh-in . Brown is mostly remembered for his portly physique, wide ingratiating smile, mobile facial expressions, and easy pleasant joking style. Brown was most famous, however, for his role as building superintendent  Nathan Bookman  on the 1970s  CBS  sitcom,  Good Times . Bookman was often the brunt of fat jokes via the show's main character  J. J. Evans  ( Jimmie Walker ). Brown portrayed Bookman until the series was cancelled in 1979. Maya Angelou has become the first Black woman ever to appear on a US quarter, after a coin featuring the late poet and activist’s image went into circulation on Monday. The quarter features an image of Angelou with her arms uplifted, a bird in flight and a rising sun behind her, with a portrait of George Washington on the “heads” side. The US Mint said the image of Angelou was “inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived” .

MELVIN VAN PEEBLES

Filmmaker, author, and actor Melvin Van Peebles was born on August 21, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up during World War II, he spent his adolescence with his father, a tailor. Van Peebles graduated from Township High School in Phoenix, Illinois, in 1949 and spent a year at West Virginia State College before transferring to Ohio Wesleyan University where he earned his B.A. degree in English literature in 1953. During the late 1950s, Van Peebles served three and a half years as a flight navigator in the United States Air Force. After the military, he lived briefly in Mexico and San Francisco where he wrote his first book,  The Big Heart , which was about the life of San Francisco’s cable cars and their drivers. Moving to the Netherlands, he studied at the Dutch National Theatre before moving to France in the early 1960s. In 1990 he landed a starring role as E.Z.E. in  House Party , after which he started doing  stand-up  in bars in  Los Angeles . He later appeared in  Lethal Weapon 3  as a drug dealer and in  Menace II Society . His biggest role was in the 1995 comedy  Friday , as Ezal, a crackhead and thief. He has also appeared in  Panther ,  The Players Club ,  B*A*P*S ,  I Got The Hook Up , [ Def Jam's How to Be a Player  and  Repos , and in rap videos: in Dr. Dre's " Dre Day " (1992), he played Sleazy-E, a parody of  Eazy-E , and he appeared again as Sleazy-E in the video for Eazy-E's " Real Muthaphuckkin G's " (1993), this time being assaulted.

Suzzanne Douglas  (April 12, 1957 – July 6, 2021) was an American actress. [2]  She is best known for her role as matriarch Jerri Peterson on  The WB  sitcom  The Parent 'Hood , [2]  starring  Robert Townsend  which ran from 1995–1999. Douglas portrayed Amy Simms in the 1989 dance/drama film  Tap  alongside  Gregory Hines  and  Sammy Davis, Jr , for which she received an  NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture . In addition to Tap, Douglas has starred in several other motion pictures, among them  How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998),  Jason's Lyric  (1994),  The Inkwell (1994) as well as the 2003  Disney / ABC version of  Sounder  with  Carl Lumbly . Douglas is also best known for her portrayal as  Cissy Houston  in the  Lifetime  TV movie  Whitney  in 2015. Leon Spinks  (July 11, 1953 – February 5, 2021) was an American  professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1995. In only his eighth professional fight, he won the  undisputed   heavyweight  championship in 1978 after defeating  Muhammad Ali  in a  split decision , in what was considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Spinks was later stripped of the  WBC  title for facing Ali in an unapproved rematch seven months later, which he lost by  unanimous decision .

Cicely Tyson  (December 19, 1924 – January 28, 2021) was an American  actress  and  fashion model . In a career spanning more than seven decades, she became known for her portrayal of strong  African-American women . [3] [4]  Tyson was the recipient of three  Primetime Emmy Awards , four  Black Reel Awards , one  Screen Actors Guild Award , one  Tony Award , an  honorary Academy Award , and a  Peabody Award .

Adolfo "Shabba-Doo" Quiñones

Quiñones was born and raised in  Chicago ,  Illinois , United States; his father was Puerto Rican, and his mother was African American. His mother raised him as a single parent from the age of three. [4]  He had a younger sister, Fawn Quiñones, who was also a dancer, and frequently featured on the musical variety television program  Soul Train . [5]  He died at age 65 in December 2020, at his home.

Ecstasy, born on June 7, 1964, formed Whodini with Jalil Hutchins in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1982. DJ Grandmaster Dee later joined the group in 1986. Together, they went on to record hit singles, “The Haunted House of Rock,” “Friends,” “Freaks Come Out at Night,” becoming a vital name in the hip hop scene.

TOMMY TINY LISTER AKA DEEBO

Thomas  " Tiny "  Lister Jr.  (June 24, 1958 – December 10, 2020) was an American  character actor  and occasional  professional wrestler  known for his roles as the neighborhood bully Deebo in the 1995 film  Friday  and its  2000 sequel  and as President Lindberg in  The Fifth Element . He had two short  professional wrestling  stints, wrestling  Hulk Hogan  in the  World Wrestling Federation (WWF) after appearing as  Zeus  in the 1989 movie  No Holds Barred  and resuming the feud as  Z-Gangsta  in 1996 for  World Championship Wrestling  (WCW). [1]  He was  blind  in his right eye.

Chadwick Aaron Boseman [5]  (November 29, 1976 – August 28, 2020) was an American actor and producer. He was best known for his portrayals of real-life historical figures, such as  Jackie Robinson  in  42  (2013),  James Brown  in  Get on Up  (2014) and  Thurgood Marshall  in  Marshall  (2017), and for his portrayal of the superhero  Black Panther  in the  Marvel Cinematic Universe  films, most notably in  Black Panther  (2018), for which he won a  NAACP Image Award  and a  Screen Actors Guild Award ,  Captain America: Civil War (2016),  Avengers: Infinity War  (2018), and  Avengers: Endgame  (2019). He also starred in films such as  21 Bridges  (2019) and  Da 5 Bloods  (2020). Boseman died at age 43 following a four-year battle with  colon cancer . [6]   [7]
