Blanche Kelso Bruce March 1, 1841 – March 17, 1898 was an American politician who represented Mississippi as a Republican in the United States Senate from 1875 to 1881. Born into slavery in Prince Edward County, Virginia, he went on to become the first elected African-American senator to serve a full term Hiram R. Revels, also of Mississippi, was the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate but did not complete a full term.

Matthew A. Cherry, the  inventor  of the tricycle, was born on February 5, 1834 in  Washington, D.C . While not much is known about his early life, it is evident that he had a passion for revolutionizing transportation. He is known for his improvement on the velocipede, followed by his invention of both the tricycle and the streetcar fender. Cherry prefaced his inventions with a great improvement on the velocipede. A precursor to the modern-day bicycle, this vehicle consisted of a metal seat frame with wheels attached. The riders were able to transport themselves quickly by moving their feet along the ground to propel the frame. Before pedals, this was quite a fast way to travel around town. Cherry’s model of the velocipede was an improvement on past versions, and eventually his model evolved into the tricycle, which is still used today. Rebecca Lee Crumpler , born Rebecca Davis, (February 8, 1831 – March 9, 1895), was an American physician, nurse and author. After studying at the  New England Female Medical College , in 1864 she became the first African American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States.Crumpler was also one of the first female physician authors in the nineteenth century.In 1883, she published  A Book of Medical Discourses . The book has two parts that cover the prevention and cure of infantile bowel complaints, and the life and growth of human beings. Dedicated to nurses and mothers, it focuses on  maternal  and  pediatric medical care  and was among the first publications written by an African American on the subject of medicine.
