James Nathaniel Brown (February 17, 1936 – May 18, 2023) was an American football player, sports analyst, social activist and actor. He played as a fullback for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) from 1957 through 1965. Considered to be one of the greatest running backs of all time, as well as one of the greatest players in NFL history,[1] Brown was a Pro Bowl invitee every season he was in the league, was recognized as the AP NFL Most Valuable Player three times, and won an NFL championship with the Browns in 1964. Several incidents centering on the segregation of the local bowling alley,  All-Star Bowling Lane , led up to the Orangeburg Massacre on February 8, 1968. In the fall of 1967, some of the black leaders within the community tried to convince Harry K. Floyd, the owner of the bowling alley, to allow African Americans. Floyd was unwilling to desegregate, and as a result, protests began in early February 1968. On February 5, 1968, a group of around 40 students from  South Carolina State University  entered the bowling alley and left peacefully after they were asked to leave by Floyd. [3]  The next night more students led by John Stroman returned and entered the bowling alley. This time police were waiting for them, and several students were detained, including Stroman. John Brown  (June 11, 1937 – March 2, 2022) was an American actor and singer. Brown was a nightclub and stage performer as well as a comic actor, and a regular cast member of the television series  Laugh-in . Brown is mostly remembered for his portly physique, wide ingratiating smile, mobile facial expressions, and easy pleasant joking style. Brown was most famous, however, for his role as building superintendent  Nathan Bookman  on the 1970s  CBS  sitcom,  Good Times . Maya Angelou has become the first Black woman ever to appear on a US quarter, after a coin featuring the late poet and activist’s image went into circulation on Monday. The quarter features an image of Angelou with her arms uplifted, a bird in flight and a rising sun behind her, with a portrait of George Washington on the “heads” side. The US Mint said the image of Angelou was “inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived” .

Filmmaker, author, and actor Melvin Van Peebles was born on August 21, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up during World War II, he spent his adolescence with his father, a tailor. Van Peebles graduated from Township High School in Phoenix, Illinois, in 1949 and spent a year at West Virginia State College before transferring to Ohio Wesleyan University where he earned his B.A. degree in English literature in 1953. During the late 1950s, Van Peebles served three and a half years as a flight navigator in the United States Air Force. After the military, he lived briefly in Mexico and San Francisco where he wrote his first book,  The Big Heart , which was about the life of San Francisco’s cable cars and their drivers. Moving to the Netherlands, he studied at the Dutch National Theatre before moving to France in the early 1960s. In 1990 he landed a starring role as E.Z.E. in  House Party , after which he started doing  stand-up  in bars in  Los Angeles . He later appeared in  Lethal Weapon 3  as a drug dealer and in  Menace II Society . His biggest role was in the 1995 comedy  Friday , as Ezal, a crackhead and thief. [2]  She is best known for her role as matriarch Jerri Peterson on  The WB  sitcom  The Parent 'Hood , [2]  starring  Robert Townsend  which ran from 1995–1999. Douglas portrayed Amy Simms in the 1989 dance/drama film  Tap  alongside  Gregory Hines  and  Sammy Davis, Jr , for which she received an  NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture . Leon Spinks  (July 11, 1953 – February 5, 2021) was an American  professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1995. In only his eighth professional fight, he won the  undisputed   heavyweight  championship in 1978 after defeating  Muhammad Ali  in a  split decision , in what was considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Spinks was later stripped of the  WBC  title for facing Ali in an unapproved rematch seven months later, which he lost by  unanimous decision .

Quiñones was born and raised in  Chicago ,  Illinois , United States; his father was Puerto Rican, and his mother was African American. His mother raised him as a single parent from the age of three. Patricia Eva "Bonnie" Pointer  (July 11, 1950-June 8, 2020) was an American singer, most notable for being a member of the  Grammy Award –winning vocal group,  The Pointer Sisters . Pointer scored several moderate  solo hits  after leaving the Pointers in 1977, including a disco cover of  The Elgins ' " Heaven Must Have Sent You " which became a U.S. top 20 pop hit on September 1, 1979.

Westley Sissel Unseld  (March 14, 1946 – June 2, 2020) was an American professional  basketball  player, coach and executive. He spent his entire  National Basketball Association  (NBA) career with the  Baltimore/Capital/Washington Bullets . Unseld played  college basketball  for the  Louisville Cardinals  and was selected with the second overall pick by the Bullets in the  1968 NBA draft . He was named the  NBA Most Valuable Player  during his rookie season and joined  Wilt Chamberlain  as the only two players in NBA history to accomplish the feat. Unseld won an  NBA championship  with the Bullets in  1978 . After retiring from playing in 1981, he worked with the Bullets as a vice president, head coach and general manager.

She was also prominent in regard to the use of  whistle register .
